This being the Summer Season, The Gentleman Thug finds himself watching rather more television than he would like. This is one of the great benefits of living in a country with the sense to avoid hot summers. Personally I find 68 degrees and drizzle to be the perfect July climate.
Anything hotter than this inevitably results in the streets being crammed with sweating and bloated 14 year old baby machines shoving prams in to traffic and cramming Greggs’ Sausage rolls in to the mouths of their dim-witted offspring.
Once again, I find myself straying from the point…
Last night saw a programme that concerned itself with deciding the all time top 20 ABBA singles.
This whole ABBA thing infuriates The Gentleman Thug. In the 1970s they were a trashy pop group liked only by old ladies and homosexuals. They were rather like the late Princess Diana, in this regard.
But this being the 21st Centaury, where we are unable to sift the good from the bad, ABBA are hailed as a cross between Mozart and Shakespeare (but with more satin and blue eye-shadow).
Why, we even had Bono, taking time off from making sanctimonious speeches about Africa to become the thinking man’s Stuart Maconie and telling us that “Great Pop music never dies”.
So there you have it – ABBA, as long lasting as spent plutonium, supermarket carrier bags and genital herpes.
Also – what does Bono know about “Great Pop music”?
